Choosing micro-influencers versus macro-influencers: how do I actually decide when everything points both ways?

I’ve been going in circles on this decision for months, and I need to think out loud.

Our product works well with both types. We’ve seen micro-influencers (10K-100K followers) deliver killer engagement and authenticity. We’ve also seen macro-influencers (500K+) bring scale and reach that converts. So how do I choose?

The conventional wisdom says “it depends on your goal”—but my goal is the same for both: profitable growth. And both can deliver that. The real question is: where should I spend my limited budget?

I’ve been looking at my data, and here’s where I’m stuck. A micro-influencer costs $500-2K per post and typically gets 2-5K engaged clicks. A macro-influencer costs $5K-15K per post and gets 50K+ clicks but lower engagement rate. Mathematically, the micro-influencer looks better on CPM. But the macro-influencer’s reach could build brand awareness that compounds.

Here’s what I haven’t figured out: if I’m connecting with creators across both markets (Russia and US), how do I leverage both tiers strategically without splitting my budget into ineffective pieces? And what are other people actually seeing in their performance data?

Here’s my take: the choice depends on your unit economics, not on intuition.

Let me be specific. Calculate this for each tier:

  • Cost per post
  • Average engaged clicks (people who actually interact)
  • Your conversion rate from click to customer
  • Average customer lifetime value

Then work backwards. If your LTV is $500 and macro-influencers get you one customer per $8K spent, that’s a losing equation. If micro-influencers get you one customer per $1.5K spent, they win—even if they reach fewer people.

What I’ve seen: micro-influencers usually win on unit economics for most DTC brands. But macro-influencers win on brand building and market positioning. So the question isn’t really “which is better?” It’s “what are you optimizing for this quarter?”

If it’s revenue this quarter—micro. If it’s brand dominance for next year—macro plus micro.

One more thing: creators know this too. When you pitch to a macro-influencer, ask what their conversion looks like. Most will give you honest numbers. That data solves your question.

Okay, real talk from someone who works with both sides: micro-influencers have way more authentic relationships with their audiences. We actually know our people. We see their comments, respond to them, build community.

Macro-influencers are broadcast. They post, millions see it, most don’t care.

So if you’re selling something that requires trust (and most things do), micro is better. But if you’re launching something and you just need people to know it exists, macro works.

Honestly? I’d start with micro. Build the foundation with people who care deeply. Then, if you want scale, bring in macro. But don’t reverse it—macro-first rarely works well.

Also, the best opportunities come from relationships. If you work with a micro-influencer and deliver a great product, they might introduce you to other creators, including macros. That’s free networking.

Don’t see it as micro versus macro. See it as micro first, then scale with macro.

This is fundamentally a question about your marketing funnel and where you have the biggest gap.

Here’s the framework I use:

If your problem is awareness (not enough people know you exist): Macro-influencers first. Raw reach. Measure Brand Lift, not immediate sales.

If your problem is consideration (people know you but don’t prefer you): Micro-influencers shine here. Deeper engagement, more persuasive narratives.

If your problem is conversion (people consider you but don’t buy): Micro again. Authentic recommendations carry more weight than celebrity endorsements.

Now, practically: run a small test with both tiers simultaneously. Keep cohorts comparable (similar audience demographics), run for 4 weeks, measure everything (awareness lift, engagement, conversion rate, CAC). The data will tell you which tier is more efficient for YOUR funnel.

Finally: tiered campaigns often outperform single-tier strategies. Macro for upper funnel, micro for lower funnel. It’s not either/or.
