I’ve been considering hiring a US-based agency to help me scale campaigns into the American market, but I’m genuinely lost on how to vet them. I’ve looked at portfolios and case studies, but everything feels a bit generic. How do I know if they actually understand what I’m trying to build, or if they’ll just treat me like another client and recommend whatever’s trendy that month?
I’ve heard horror stories from founders: agencies that over-promise, underdeliver, disappear once the retainer starts, or recommend strategies that make sense on a slide deck but don’t work in practice. I’ve also heard about the opposite—agencies that are brilliant but charge rates that make your head spin.
What I really need to figure out is: What questions should I ask during the vetting process? How do you know if an agency has actually worked with international brands before, or if they’re just claiming they have? Should I start with a small project or jump into a retainer? How much should I expect to pay for something legitimate versus getting ripped off?
For those of you who’ve hired US-based partners or agencies, what was the biggest red flag you missed the first time, and what are you looking for now that you know better?
