I’ve been experimenting with AI-powered creator discovery tools over the last few months, and I want to be honest about what’s working and what’s still basically snake oil.
The promise is obvious: throw in your campaign parameters, and AI finds creators who fit your audience, brand values, and ROI targets. Sounds great. But when I started actually comparing AI recommendations to creators I found manually or through agency networks, I started seeing real gaps.
The good part: AI is genuinely fast at surfacing creators based on audience overlap and engagement patterns. If I’m looking for creators whose followers match a specific demographic profile, AI tools can scan thousands of creators and surface relevant names in hours instead of weeks. That part is legitimately valuable.
But here’s where it falls apart: authenticity and market fit. AI can tell me a creator has audience overlap with my target market. It can run engagement rate analysis. But it can’t really assess whether a creator genuinely understands a market’s culture, or whether their audience will actually respond to a specific product category. Those things require actual human judgment.
I ran a test: I used AI discovery to find creators for a campaign targeting Russian-speakers in the US, then I also sent the same briefing to some creators I already knew and trusted. The AI-discovered creators had technically great metrics on paper. But when we actually ran the campaigns, the hand-picked creators outperformed by about 40% on conversion. Same products, similar budgets, completely different results.
The difference? The creators I knew had context. They understood what would actually resonate with a bilingual audience, what skepticisms they’d encounter, where the messaging needed to land differently.
So now I’m thinking: AI is useful for the first 80% of discovery—surfacing candidates, filtering for basic compatibility. But the last 20%—validating cultural fit, assessing market understanding, and predicting authentic resonance—that still requires expertise and experience that AI hasn’t really figured out.
Where are you in this journey? Are you using AI tools for creator discovery, and if so, what’s been the actual ROI compared to traditional methods?
