UGC content that actually converts: what's different about American audiences?

I’ve been creating content for Russian audiences for years, and I’ve got a pretty solid handle on what works—what trends, what resonates, what makes people actually want to buy. But now I’m trying to create UGC content for American brands (and for my own US expansion), and it feels like I’m starting from zero.

The pacing is different. The humor is different. The values are different. People seem to care about different things.

I’m getting feedback that some of my content feels “try-hard” or “too polished,” which is wild because in Russia, people love polish and production value. Here, it seems like authenticity and imperfection are actually more valuable.

So I’m trying to figure out: what are the core differences in what American audiences respond to in UGC? Should I completely change my content style, or is there a way to translate what I know while adapting to local tastes?

Also, what niches or product categories are easiest to crack as a new UGC creator in the US? And what are people actually looking for when they hire UGC creators?

Thanks in advance—I’m genuinely trying to level up my craft here.

Oh my god, you just described my entire first year in US UGC! The polished thing was literally my biggest blocker. I was coming from a background where everything had to be perfect, and American audiences were like “ew, why does this feel like a commercial?”

Here’s what I figured out: American UGC consumers want to feel like they’re watching a friend’s unboxing or quick product demo, not a production. It’s actually less about being bad quality and more about being authentic quality—good lighting, clear audio, but maybe you’re in your bedroom or kitchen, you’re wearing normal clothes, your hair isn’t perfectly done. They want real.

The biggest shift for me was permission to show personality. Like, comedy, vulnerability, weird energy—all of that actually performs better than “I tested this product and here’s why you should buy it.” The sell has to feel incidental to the entertainment.

For untapped niches as a new UGC creator here: beauty, supplements, and home goods are oversaturated. But tech accessories, fitness equipment, and sustainable products—less crowded, better rates usually.

When brands hire me, they’re looking for: someone who can turn on camera and just… be themselves while using the product. They want 3-5 different “takes” on the same product (one serious, one funny, one more casual). They want it feeling natural. And honestly? They want someone who won’t demand huge contracts just to make a couple 15-second videos.

I’d say start with something you genuinely love and use. Your passion will come through more than anything else.

One tactical thing that helped me: study what’s actually working on TikTok and Instagram Reels from small creators, not big brands. Look for UGC creators who’ve been hired by multiple brands (you can usually tell by the quality and consistency). Notice their energy, pacing, how they introduce products, when they show the actual product vs. the benefit.

Then—and this is important—don’t copy them exactly. Adapt their structure to your own personality. American audiences are really sensitive to feeling like you’re copying someone else’s formula.
