I just went through a partnership that looked perfect on paper but completely fell apart once we started collaborating. And I realized—I never actually asked the right questions upfront.
Like, I knew the brand’s follower count, their vibe seemed aligned, and the payment was decent. But I had no idea:
- What kind of creative freedom I’d actually have
- How long the approval process would take
- Whether they’d want to just use my content as a one-off ad or if they actually saw value in building something longer-term
- How they handled contract terms and payment timing
- What their actual expectations were around exclusivity or posting timeline
By the time these things came up, I was already halfway through production and it was too late to back out without looking unprofessional.
I’m trying to build a system now where I vet partnerships better before committing. I know some people use scorecards or detailed briefing docs, but I’m not sure what actually matters to ask about when you’re first talking to a brand or another creator.
What are the questions you’ve learned to ask early on that actually prevent problems later? What’s been a dealbreaker question for you that you wish you’d asked sooner?
I’ll be direct: most creators don’t vet partners thoroughly enough, and it costs them.
Here’s what I tell creators to ask before signing ANYTHING:
Legal & Commercial:
- What’s the contract length and rate?
- Is payment upfront, on delivery, or on performance?
- What happens if they change direction midway?
- Are there exclusivity clauses? For how long?
Brand Quality:
- Can they show past creator partnerships and results?
- Who’s your single point of contact and decision-maker?
- What’s their approval process and how long does it take?
Creative:
- Do I pitch ideas or execute to their spec?
- How many revision rounds do we have?
- Can I repurpose this content for my own audience after the campaign?
Performance:
- What are they measuring? (Sales? Clicks? Awareness?)
- Will they share performance data with you?
- What’s considered ‘success’?
If a brand hesitates on any of these—walk. There are better partners.
Bonus: ask for references. Call other creators they’ve worked with. Takes 15 minutes and saves you months of headache.
Okay so I learned this the hard way too, and now I have like a simple mental checklist:
Before I say yes:
- Do I actually like the product? Would I use it? (If the answer is no, the content will feel forced)
- Does the brand seem professional? How do they communicate? Are they responsive?
- What’s the timeline? Does it feel realistic or rushed?
- Are they open to my style or do they want me to completely change my vibe?
In the conversation:
- I literally ask “What will make you happy with this partnership?” — super simple but it gets them to articulate expectations
- “Can I see an example of a campaign you loved?” — tells you so much about their taste
- “If the first version isn’t quite right, how do we iterate?” — frames it as collaborative
The tone matters too. If they’re talking AT me instead of WITH me, that’s a vibe that carries into the whole partnership.
Honestly? Trust your gut. If something feels off in the initial conversations, it probably is. I’ve ignored that instinct before and regretted it every time.
Do you usually do calls with brands before committing, or is it mostly email?
This is a risk management problem, not a content problem.
You need a standardized intake questionnaire. Here’s the framework:
Tier 1 (Disqualifiers):
- Do they have a clear brief or are they figuring it out as they go?
- Can they articulate their target audience?
- Is there a realistic timeline?
Tier 2 (Performance Metrics):
- How do they define success? (Impressions, conversions, brand lift?)
- Will they provide performance data post-campaign?
- What’s their historical CPM or CAC?
Tier 3 (Operational):
- Approval process and number of review rounds
- Legal terms (usage rights, exclusivity, duration)
- Payment terms (I’d never recommend accepting net-30 or longer)
Tier 4 (Relationship Health):
- Who’s the decision-maker and are they accessible?
- How do they communicate under pressure?
- Will this be a one-off or could it be recurring?
Make this a checklist you send to every brand. It does three things:
- It filters out brands that aren’t serious
- It sets professional expectations upfront
- It creates a paper trail for if things go sideways
What’s your biggest blocker—getting brands to answer these questions, or knowing which ones are actual dealbreakers for you?
