I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately, especially after experimenting with different AI tools for influencer vetting. There’s a lot of hype around AI discovery, but I think the more interesting question is: what can AI actually see that experienced humans would miss?
I started digging into this because I was skeptical. I’ve worked with influencers across Russian and US markets for years, and I thought my gut instinct was pretty good. But then I started using some AI vetting tools alongside my traditional research, and I realized AI is actually catching things I was completely blind to.
Here are three categories of things AI found that I would’ve missed:
1. Engagement authenticity patterns – AI tools can analyze engagement velocity, audience growth patterns, and comment-to-like ratios across time. I was just looking at overall numbers. What I discovered is that some creators have engagement patterns that look normal on the surface but show signs of bot activity or paid engagement when you dig deeper. A creator might have 100K followers with 5% engagement, which sounds fine, but if the AI sees that 80% of their new followers came in a single week, plus their engagement-to-follower ratio changed significantly, that’s a red flag.
2. Audience overlap mismatches – This was huge for me. AI tools can cross-reference a creator’s audience against demographic and interest databases. I was working with a creator who had supposedly “young female audience interested in beauty,” but when the AI mapped their actual audience data, it turned out 60% of their followers didn’t match that profile at all. They were mostly older male accounts following for different reasons. That mismatch would’ve tanked a campaign focused on millennial women.
3. Content-audience misalignment – This is subtle but important. AI can actually measure whether a creator’s content topics actually match their audience interests. I found one creator whose content was about fitness, but their audience was primarily interested in fashion and lifestyle. The AI flagged this as a warning sign—the creator might be losing audience relevance. Sure enough, their engagement had been slowly declining for months.
Now here’s the thing: I’m not saying AI is better than human judgment. But I am saying that AI is better at systematic pattern detection across large datasets. I can talk to 10 creators personally and get great instincts, but I can’t systematically analyze 500 creators by hand.
The real power seems to be in combining both. I do my AI screening first to flag potential issues or confirm that the basics check out, then I do a human review on the top candidates. When I talk to the creator or their manager, I’m asking more informed questions because I already know what the AI flagged.
