So I’ve been testing a few AI-powered creator discovery tools over the last couple months, and I want to be honest about what I’ve found: some of it is genuinely useful, but a lot of it is still missing the point.
The tools are great at answering straightforward questions: “Show me all creators in the fitness space with audiences between 50k and 500k in the US.” You can build filters, run searches, and get results in seconds instead of spending weeks manually researching. That’s real.
But here’s where it falls apart: defining what “right” actually means. AI can tell you if a creator’s audience demographics match your target market, but it can’t tell you if the creator’s actual values align with your brand. It can’t tell you if their audience actually trusts them. It can’t predict whether the partnership is going to feel authentic or forced.
Last month, I was using an AI tool to find creators for a sustainable fashion brand. The algorithm returned creators with huge sustainability-focused audiences, perfect engagement rates, everything looked good on paper. But when I actually went and looked at their content, it was clear they were just jumping on trends. There was no real conviction behind what they were saying. The algorithm missed that completely.
That said—I don’t think the question is “should I use AI or not?” I think it’s “what should I use AI for, and what should I do manually?”
Here’s my current system:
AI does the initial filtering. It narrows down from “thousands of potential creators” to “50 creators who fit the basic criteria.” That saves massive time and removes obvious mismatches.
Humans do the real vetting. I’m looking at their actual content, reading comments, checking if they seem genuinely engaged with their community, seeing if there’s a through-line to their messaging. I’m also looking for red flags: sudden follower spikes, low comment quality, any sense that the audience doesn’t actually trust them.
AI could help with the second part, but only if it’s trained on the right signals. Most tools are trained on surface-level metrics. They don’t understand nuance.
What I’m curious about: are there tools out there that are actually solving this better? And more importantly—when you’re working across markets (say, finding creators who can speak authentically to both Russian and US audiences), can AI even help with the cultural understanding part?
What’s your experience? Is AI creator discovery saving you time, or are you just spending the same amount of time but with an added tool in the mix?
