I’ve been coordinating influencer campaigns across US and Russian markets for the last year, and finding creators who genuinely fit—not just on paper, but in reality—has been the hardest part of my job.
The problem: Traditional discovery is broken for cross-market work. Instagram’s search gives you follower counts, not market understanding. Agencies claim they have ‘vetted networks’, but when you dig into it, they often haven’t actually validated whether the creator’s audience composition matches your target market or whether they have exposure in your specific market.
Here’s what I’ve learned works:
1. Start with audience alignment, not influencer size. I stopped looking for ‘big’ creators and started looking for creators whose followers actually match my brand’s target demographic across both markets. A 50K follower creator with 80% of their audience in your target demographic beats a 500K creator who’s 60% there.
2. Verify creator experience in your vertical. Does this creator have a track record working with brands like yours? What was the ROI for previous partnerships? I’ve started asking for case studies or at least performance data from recent campaigns. If they won’t share it, that’s a red flag.
3. Check for actual cross-market exposure. Some creators have audiences that are mostly concentrated in one market, even if they claim to be ‘bilingual’ or ‘international’. I look at their engagement patterns, where their audience is actually engaging from, and whether they’ve successfully run cross-market campaigns before.
4. Have a real conversation about expectations. Before any partnership, I do a 20-minute call with the creator. I ask: ‘What’s your rate? What does that include? Do you have exclusivity clauses? What’s your typical turnaround on content?’ This filters out a ton of misalignment.
The brands I work with have also gotten better at being specific about what ‘vetted’ means to them. One client told me, ‘We need a creator who’s shipped at least 5 partnerships with SaaS companies in the past year and has proof of engagement above 2%.’ That specificity makes finding the right creator SO much faster.
What’s your process for vetting creators? Are you relying on agencies, doing it yourself, or using platforms? And what actually signals ‘vetted’ to you—what are non-negotiables?
