The key insight is that the indicators are different, but the methodology is the same: historical baseline + deviation detection + manual spot-checking on anomalies.
We also subscribe to a couple of Russian-specific influencer databases that track engagement patterns specific to Cyrillic networks. That context alone catches 40% of fraud we’d never spot otherwise.
One more tactical thing: we built a “fraud risk scoring” system where indicators get weighted differently by market. A sudden 50K follower spike is worth investigating in the US. In Russia during peak seasons (back-to-school, New Year), it’s almost normal for tier-2 creators. So our threshold adjusts. Same with engagement rate anomalies—what’s suspicious in one market is baseline performance in another.

Your fraud detection should be Bayesian, not rule-based. Start with base fraud rates for each market (these are knowable—Russian influencer fraud rates are documented, US rates are documented). Then update your confidence based on specific signals.
Why this matters: a 5% engagement rate is normal in one market, suspicious in another. But if you’re updating your prior based on actual data, the system adapts. You’re not saying “this metric is always wrong.” You’re saying “this metric relative to market baseline suggests fraud with 73% confidence.”
Operationally, this means:
- Segment your fraud detection by market
- Build market-specific base rates
- Use identical detection logic, but parameterize it by market
- Version control your parameters so you can audit why decisions changed
The brands winning at this aren’t the ones with the most sophisticated AI. They’re the ones honest about market differences and willing to maintain separate playbooks.
One more strategic note: your fraud detection data is incredibly valuable long-term. Every time you flag something as fraud (or correctly identify something as legitimate), that’s training data. After 6-12 months of bilateral market operations, you’ll have enough data to build something proprietary and way more accurate than generic tools. That’s where you get your competitive edge—not in the AI itself, but in having market-specific intelligence that nobody else has built yet.
