I’ve been analyzing UGC campaigns that span both Russian and US audiences for the better part of a year, and I keep running into the same problem: the metrics that say “this is winning in Russia” are completely different from the metrics that say “this is winning in the US.”
This matters because if you’re running a single campaign across both markets, you need a reporting structure that doesn’t hide the real story.
Here’s what I’ve learned:
Raw engagement rate is useless for cross-market comparison. Russian TikTok audiences tend to engage more actively than US TikTok audiences, but US Instagram audiences engage differently than Russian Instagram audiences. Comparing raw percentages across platforms and regions is comparing apples to oranges. I started normalizing by platform and region—that immediately made the data readable.
Comment sentiment matters way more than comment volume. In Russia, high-quality comments mean people are asking questions or adding context. In the US, high-quality comments are usually trend references or humor. I built a simple sentiment framework (question, affirmation, trend reference, criticism) and started tracking by type. This revealed which concepts actually resonated vs. which ones just had algorithmic boost.
Conversion funnel metrics are more honest than vanity metrics. If I care whether UGC actually drove purchases, I need to track: impressions → video completion → link clicks → landing page visits → purchases. This breaks down differently per region because user behavior is different. But this is the only metric that actually tells me if the campaign moved business.
Creator audience composition changed the interpretation of results. A creator with 100k US followers and strong engagement might actually be less valuable than a creator with 30k followers who are hyper-engaged and relevant to the product. I started looking at audience demographics within the creator’s followers, not just follower count.
Latency in results is real and easily ignored. US audiences might convert faster (24-48 hours), but Russian audiences demonstrate purchase intent over a longer window (7-14 days). If you measure success at day 3, you’ll miss the Russian conversion spike.
My measurement framework now has three layers:
- Engagement layer (normalized by platform and region, tracked by sentiment type)
- Conversion layer (funnel metrics with region-specific timeframes)
- Audience layer (creator audience composition and relevance)
But here’s where I’m still stuck: how do you actually balance these metrics when you’re reporting to a stakeholder who just wants one number? And how do you know when a market-specific result is a feature (that market genuinely responds differently) vs. a bug (the creative missed the mark)?
