I talk to a lot of creators who land sponsorships, but most of them are one-offs. Brand comes in, pays for one post, disappears. Rinse, repeat. It’s exhausting and unpredictable.
What interests me more is the creators and agencies I know who’ve managed to flip that—where they have 2-3 brands they work with consistently, month after month. It’s not a random partnership; it’s structured like a retainer.
I worked with one microinfluencer recently who negotiated a six-month retainer with a Russian beauty brand. They agreed on: 2 posts per month, consistent posting day, some input from the creator on what actually resonates with her audience. No more “here’s a brief, make it work in 48 hours.” The brand understood they weren’t hiring a vending machine; they were hiring a partner.
What changed the dynamic wasn’t just the money—it was stability. The brand got predictable content. The creator got predictable income. Both sides had time to actually understand what works.
But I know not every brand is ready for retainers, and not every creator knows how to pitch them. I’ve seen creators undersell themselves massively when they finally get a retainer conversation. They think “oh, it’s ongoing, so I should lower my rate.” Nope. The opposite is usually true—consistency and exclusivity should cost more, not less.
How many of you have actually negotiated a retainer? What made the difference between a brand saying “yes, let’s commit for six months” versus “thanks, we’ll call you if we need something”? And for creators, what’s the actual math on retainers versus chasing new sponsors every month?
