I’ve gotten more careful about influencer vetting, mostly because I got burned twice in the past year. First time, we partnered with an influencer who had solid-looking metrics—100k followers, 8-10% engagement rate—but when the campaign went live, conversion was basically zero. Felt like the audience wasn’t even real.
Second time, we discovered mid-campaign that an influencer had multiple accounts posting the same content. Clearly trying to game the system, and by then we’d already funded the partnership.
Now I’m much more paranoid about fraud detection. I’m using AI-backed tools that analyze engagement patterns, account behavior, and audience quality metrics. But I’m also skeptical of those tools—I don’t want to flag legitimate creators as fraudsters just because their metrics look unusual.
Here’s what I’ve started looking for manually, and what I’m validating with AI tools:
Engagement pattern red flags:
- Sudden spikes in followers (50k new followers in one week? Suspicious)
- Engagement rates that don’t match follower count (1M followers with 2% engagement is normal; 10k followers with 0.5% engagement is suspicious)
- Comments that look bot-generated (“Great post bro!!” with no connection to content)
- Engagement coming from accounts that look inactive or fake
Content and audience red flags:
- Audience demographics that don’t match stated niche (beauty influencer with 80% audience in countries irrelevant to their content)
- Followers from countries where the influencer doesn’t post
- Old content that still gets recent engagement (sometimes it’s natural, sometimes it looks artificial)
Account behavior red flags:
- Long stretches of inactivity followed by sudden posts
- Rapid changes in posting frequency or content style
- Accounts that follow/unfollow in bulk patterns
AI tools can flag all of this automatically now, which saves me hours. But here’s what I’m wrestling with: false positives. Some legitimate creators have unusual engagement patterns because they’re rising stars, or because they went viral once, or because they appeal to niche communities that skew toward specific geographies.
So I layer the AI flags with human judgment. My team looks at:
- Does their content quality and messaging align with our brand?
- When we contact them, do they respond professionally?
- Can they provide case studies or references from other brands they’ve worked with?
- Do they seem to genuinely understand their audience?
That combination—AI detection + human validation—has been way more accurate than either approach alone.
But I’m still refining my red flag checklist. What patterns actually indicate fraud versus just unusual-looking metrics? And how much digging is too much before you just move on to the next creator?
