I’m at the point where I want to validate our positioning before we commit to a full influencer campaign, but I’m unclear on the timing. Do I test messaging with creators first, or should I get clear on positioning internally and then approach creators?
The reason I’m uncertain: I’ve heard from people that working with creators early is how you actually uncover what messaging lands. But I’ve also heard that you need to have a clear narrative before you approach creators, or you’ll waste their time.
Right now, I’m thinking about reaching out to 3-5 micro-creators in our space and offering them a small paid engagement to get feedback on how US audiences respond to different positioning angles. Something like $500-1000 per creator for a 2-3 week sprint where they give us honest feedback, maybe create 2-3 variations of content, and we iterate.
But I’m worried: Is this too early? Should I know my positioning better before this? And how do I frame this conversation so creators don’t feel used or like I’m asking for free consultancy?
How have you actually done this? Did you validate messaging with creators early, or did you wait until you had something more defined?
What’s the balance between testing and wasting people’s time?
