Best way to help creators monetize through referrals: what actually works?

I’ve been thinking about this for a while—creators are constantly asking how they can make money beyond sponsored content, and referrals feel like a natural fit. But honestly? Most referral programs I see are built for agencies or brands, not creators. The commissions are tiny, the tracking is opaque, or there’s just not enough volume to make it worthwhile.

I’m genuinely curious how other people approach this. If you’re running a referral program that successfully engages creators, how do you structure it so they actually see real income? What platforms or processes make the difference? And how do you connect creators with vetted brands that won’t waste their audience’s trust?

I want to build something that actually works for the creator side of this ecosystem, not just a checkbox program that looks good on paper.

This is exactly my space! The issue with most programs is they’re transactional instead of relational. Creators want to work with brands they genuinely believe in, not just any brand offering a referral.

What I’ve seen work: curate a vetted list of brands that align with creator audiences, give creators real context about each brand (why they’re good partners, what their values are), and then make the introduction at the right time. It feels more like matchmaking than ‘hey, go promote this random product for 2% commission’.

When creators see that you’re thoughtfully connecting them with brands they’d actually want to promote anyway, they’re way more engaged. The referrals become authentic instead of mercenary.
