Here’s what I’ve started tracking:
The tools I’m using now look at engagement patterns in ways my eyeball can’t. They flag things like:
- Comments that look like bot spam (low-relevance, generic praise, repetitive language patterns)
- Follower growth spikes that don’t match content performance (screams “bought followers”)
- Engagement concentrated from bot-like accounts vs. real users
- Sudden shifts in audience demographics
I used one tool on about 50 creators I was considering for a campaign. It flagged 8 as having significant red flags—high bot engagement, suspicious follower patterns. I did some manual spot-checking on those 8, and honestly? The tool was right on 7 of them. The one false positive was a creator with some genuinely weird engagement spikes from a Reddit mention, but otherwise legit.
What surprised me:
- Some creators I trusted had way more bot followers than I thought (not catastrophic, but notable)
- Smaller creators were often MORE authentic than larger ones
- Engagement quality matters infinitely more than engagement quantity
The limitations I’ve hit:
- These tools can’t tell you if a creator actually likes the product (authenticity goes beyond bot detection)

- I use the flagged data to inform my vetting questions (“Hey, I noticed some weird engagement patterns—what’s going on?”)
- I’m more confident pushing back on creators with clear bot problems
- I’ve stopped trusting follower count as a signal entirely
Honestly, I’d rather have this tool catch 70% of fraud accurately than manually research dozens of creators blind. But I’m also not using it as the final word—it’s one input in a broader decision.
The bigger pattern I’m noticing: brands that audit creators for authenticity before partnering are getting better results. It’s not flashy, but it works.
